adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness;
only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate,
only love can do that.”
~ Strength to Love, by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The online definition of the word politics is: the activities associated with the governance of a country or other area, especially the debate or conflict among individuals or parties having or hoping to achieve power.
I am questioning whether debate and conflict have to be the foundation for the activities associated with our governance.
MLK’s powerful words seem to have been said originally in a 1957 sermon on loving your enemies. These 60 years later, we are still learning that lesson.
In September 2018 I enrolled in a study group with 39 other students. A key learning is how to respond to unloving actions with only love. It is probably no mistake our learning “only love” is coming at just such a time as this.
Abraham Hicks’ message about politics is very enlightening:
So, then we must say, your control is in your love, even when you think they don’t deserve it. Your control is in your alignment. Your control is in your optimism. Your control is in your appreciation. Your control is in your aligning with source. Not in your pushing against, you see.
These are wonderful times.
These are wonderful times? They can be.
In these wonderful times, it can be a bit tricky to know when our actions are aligning with source rather than pushing against something we don’t agree with or like. I have been watching closely as I navigate a situation with a friend who is choosing a course of action I don’t agree with. I have been honest about my preference, but I am clear it is not my life, and it is not my choice. Another important point of my clarity is what I need to do. My words are clear: “I know you need to do what seems right for you. My choice is not about YOU. My choice is about me, and what I need to do.”
Another line from the Abraham Hicks transcript on politics: But you can’t push against anything without disengaging from the very energy that is your joy.
Although, sometimes words can deny what is really happening, you will know your words come from love when you feel it in your body. Spaciousness, not contraction, is a clue. It may take a little bit of practice to be flexible with your words and your actions, but it is worth doing.
All systems, including human systems, obey the law of requisite variety. In any system, the part with the greatest flexibility, the most requisite variety, has the greatest influence on the system. If one person in a relationship changes his or her behavior, others will have to change their behavior as a result. (Healing with Language: Your Key to Effective Mind-Body Communication, by Joel P. Bowman & Debra Basham, p. 8)
I cannot be sure if my friend recognizes or agrees with my choice. It is my choice to remain steady in my intention to express love and to bring light.
The Path of Clear Light, by Aaron expressed through Barbara Brodsky, is one of the resources for the 2-year program. Reading on page 13: “The soul grows through intention to enact the expressions of Love, Light, and Spaciousness in service to all beings, and to cease to enact that which is grounded mainly in service to self. Such intention is not easy, for the human is deeply habituated to service to self and must grow through eons of old conditioning.”
It may take a solid spiritual founding to do so, but old conditioning can be outgrown. As people go to the election polls, may our intention be to let light drive out darkness. May all human beings let love drive out hate. Only love can do that.
Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.
May all beings have happiness and the cause of happiness.
May they be free of suffering and the cause of suffering.
May they never be disassociated from the supreme happiness
which is without suffering.
May they remain in the boundless equanimity,
free from both attachment to close ones and rejection of others.
