Wooly Lamb's Ear

Nature’s best band-aid might just be growing outside your kitchen window. Wooly Lamb’s Ear (also known as Stachys byzantina) has both antiseptic and antibacterial properties. It is an anti-inflammatory. It is also great at preventing blood clots because it is a champ at absorbing blood.

lambs ear 2For centuries, this beautiful plant has been used to treat field wounds in hunters or soldiers in the battle field. Wikipedia lists multiple benefits:

The whole plant is medicinal as an alterative, antibacterial, antipyretic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, diuretic, febrifuge, hypotensive, stomachic, styptic, tonic, vermifuge and vulnerary. A cold water infusion of the freshly chopped or dried and powdered leaves makes a refreshing beverage, while a weak infusion of the plant can be used as a medicinal eye wash for sties and pinkeye. It is taken internally as a medicinal tea in the treatment of fevers, diarrhea, sore mouth and throat, internal bleeding, and weaknesses of the liver and heart.

Wooly Lamb’s Ears are very easy to grow (Zones 4-9), will multiply, and are drought and deer resistant.

You can plant them in any well-draining soil, or they will also thrive in a pot on the deck!
