A study found that people who ate whole grains burned off more calories at rest than those who did not.
For the study, researchers recorded the weight, metabolic rate, blood glucose, fecal calories, hunger and fullness for 81 participants over an eight week period. After an initial period of two weeks where all participants were given the same foods, the researchers fed some of the participants a diet with whole grains and some a diet with refined grains. The study was conducted at the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA)at Tufts University. (See Health Study)
Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel ― the bran, germ, and endosperm. Examples of whole grains include whole-wheat flour, bulgur (cracked wheat), oatmeal, whole cornmeal, and brown rice.
We do know it is often considered best to avoid breads, but that is because most often these are made from refined grains. Refined grains have the bran and germ removed.
According to the Whole Grain Council, it is of utmost necessity to read labels.
The Council says if the first ingredient listed contains the word “whole” (such as “whole wheat flour” or “whole oats”), it is likely – but not guaranteed – that the product is predominantly whole grain. If there are two grain ingredients and only the second ingredient listed is a whole grain, the product may contain as little as 1% or as much as 49% whole grain (in other words, it could contain a little bit of whole grain, or nearly half).
These are words you want to see so you know you’re getting all the nutrients of the whole grain:
• whole grain [name of grain]
• whole wheat
• whole [other grain]
• stoneground whole [grain]
• brown rice
• oats, oatmeal (including old-fashioned oatmeal, instant oatmeal)
• wheatberries
This week, take responsibility to know what’s what. Not everything is presented honestly, but you can educate yourself. Ah…. That’s right. Get the nutrients you need. Where would you live without your body?
