According to the CDC, hand washing properly (See New Hand Washing Instructions) is best. When not available, hand sanitizers are effective.
When you put something on your skin it absorbs into your body and can cause many unwanted side effects like:

Weaker Immune System
Toxic Chemical Overload
This week, make sure you are informed about the side effects of hand-sanitizers. There are hundreds of articles out there about this issue. Hand sanitizer is a good substitute when used sparingly and appropriately.
