Most of us are all too familiar with the staggering statistics that over 40 million people worldwide are dealing with dementia. That number is expected to rise as the percentage of us shifting into “older” is steadily increasing. Some estimates say the total number is expected to double that by 2030 and triple that by 2050.
Even with the dire predictions, the world Alzheimer’s report does have some good news. It turns out what’s good for your heart is also good for your brain!\\
Look after your heart. Limit portion size; limit unhealthy fats; choose whole grains; eat more vegetables and fruits.
Stay (or get) physically active. Even moderate regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risks for cardiovascular disease. Regular is the key….
Challenge your brain. There are wonderful ways to keep your brain active. What really matters is novelty. The brain benefits by doing something new.
In Think Smart: A Neuroscientist’s Prescription for Improving Your Brain’s Performance, Dr. Richard Restak offers ten tips for improving your brain, including video gaming, memory and spelling challenges, learning a new word every day, exercising, and taking a nap!
Enjoy social connections. The benefit of meaningful social connections has been known for some time now. Restak noted that one of the most common causes of forgetting and poor memory is a lack of attention to detail during our ordinary experiences. His suggestions? Note the names of herbs you taste in your foods. Join a wine-tasting group and develop nuanced awareness. I would add the development a mindful practice such as Vipassana Meditation.
This week, notice your heart and brain are part of one system. What you eat, what you think, how you experience your life—everything can be part of your developing an increased sense of well-being!
