Squiggles and Squares

Debra’s Wellness Tips

A search for personality profiles will yield over 19 million webpages. Why do you think something with so little scientific evidence commands so much of our attention? Because, instinctively, we all agree with Martha Washington, when she said, “The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions and not on our circumstances.”

You might be a Socializer, Relater, Thinker, or Director, a Lion, Otter, Golden Retriever or Beaver.

Some of the names for personality types are not very flattering. Who wants to be “Compliant” or “Controlling,” for example. When Joel Bowman (co-developer of SCS Matters) named the categories of personality sorter he developed, he tried to use names that all had positive characteristics.

Fire, Wind, Earth, and Water are names in one sorter, along with Red, Yellow, Green, or Blue, in another. A colleague and friend likes a profile that uses geometric shapes. Might the world be a better place if we were all squiggles, and no one was a square?

While we (humans) tend to display many of the same behavioral characteristics from infancy on, external behaviors can be changed. Someone who is shy can learn to interact in group situations. Someone whose natural tendency is to double-check all the facts can learn to take more chances.

This week, regardless of your behavioral characteristics or personality style, you can rise above challenging circumstances, bring a cooperative attitude to difficulties, and share the best of your natural disposition. If you would like access to the SCS Personal Profile, let me know. For sure, we all benefit by appreciating our similarities and our differences, and recognizing the value in each individual human being.
