Siesta is a mid-day nap practice found in many parts of the world, particularly where the weather is warm. Shops close, restaurants stop serving, and snoozes happen for young and old alike.
Authorities at the Salk Institute report naps are the answer to the fatigue epidemic an estimated 50 million Americans are facing. Sara C. Mednick, Ph.D, says taking Wednesday afternoon off might be a great idea. She says if we would decrease the work week, we would actually increase productivity. Check out her book, Take a Nap! Change Your Life, or watch her amazing TED talk.
According to Richard Wiseman, Night School: Wake Up to the Power of Sleep, here are some general suggestions to find the perfect nap for you:
A 10-20 minute “cat nap” can provide about a 2-hour boost in alertness.
Napping for a full hour increases memory and learning (but it can cause grogginess).
Sleeping for a full 90-minute cycle provides increased alertness, memory, and learning, plus provides additional creativity and performance, but without the grogginess.
Even a ten minute nap is better than none. In fact, Barker reports that a 2008 study showed just anticipating a nap lowers blood pressure!
This week, make adjustments in your lifestyle that incorporate the health benefits of siesta. Far from being a sign of laziness, you might just be tapping into your optimal skills and contributions. Hugzzzz….
