As the weather warms up, most of us start thinking salads. Salads provide marvelous health benefits, but to make sure you are getting those, it is very important to be smart, especially when it comes to eating salads out, according to Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
PCRM (a group that promotes a vegetarian diet and opposes the use of animals in scientific research) has reported on 100 restaurant salads that are “worse” than a Big Mac.
The group defines “worse” in terms of saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and calories, of which a Big Mac has 550, according to PCRM. (McDonald’s says the famous burger has only 530). According to PCRM, a Big Mac also contains 29 grams of fat, 75 mg of cholesterol, and 970 mg of sodium.
You can see the nutritional details of all of the salads, but three of the worst offenders are:
- Applebee’s Grilled Shrimp ‘N Spinach Salad, Regular
- Chili’s Quesadilla Explosion Salad
- IHOP’s Crispy Chicken Cobb Salad With Grilled Chicken
Of course, it is wise to not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Get into the habit of making healthy salads at home. Use romaine, green or red leaf lettuce, or the exotic baby greens, and top your salad off with plenty of fresh veggies including tomatoes, peppers, onions, radishes, cucumbers, and celery. If you are a carnivore, use lean meat. Add egg or cheese sparingly. Replace the creamy dressings and enjoy an oil and vinegar dressing made with one of the many new flavored olive oils.
This week, be salad smart. Seeing more of the big picture is key to making healthy choices.
