Debra’s Wellness Tips
For about a quarter of a century, I have been professionally engaged in education with regards to body, mind, and spirit. The focus has been primarily on innovation. It can be challenging to navigate the field, given there are sooooo many options worth investigating.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health has a VERY comprehensive website, where you can check out everything from A (Acupuncture) to Z (Zinc). It is all important.
One thing baffles me. Best to know this tendency for yourself.
When choosing a practice or practitioner for which someone already has a belief in efficacy, a practitioner that does not help you achieve your desired results is passed by but the practice continues to be valued. For example, if you go to a dentist that is not a good dentist, you go to another dentist. This is true about hair cuts, restaurants, and foot doctors, too.
However, if the first practitioner of a not-net believed in efficacy practice fails to meet the goal, the entire practice is deemed as, “I don’t believe in _____, or ______ does not (or did not) work for me.” For example, trying acupuncture. The woman I work with for acupuncture is AMAZING. I have seen others who are as well. Remember, though, in any field you have the 80/20 rule, where 80 percent of those in that field are somewhere in the middle as far as competency goes, ten percent are on the amazing end, and ten percent are on the pitiful end.
Be sure you never throw the baby out with the bathwater, especially as you explore therapies you are not yet an expert in. It really is important to know that the therapy might be appropriate, even if the therapist is not.
This week, take some time to look over the information available online. Go to NCCIH. Select something new to you to learn more about. In whatever you do for your health and well-being, keep searching for one of the top 10 percent. Your life might depend on it….
