Que Sera, Sera

Debra’s Wellness Tips

Resistance leads to persistence.
Whatever you resist or push against
simply persists and pushes back in equal measure.
Instead, transform resistance into
acceptance by practicing
“Que Sera, Sera … whatever will be, will be…”

This was the Brahma Kumaris daily thought. While most of us have some sense of the truth that we are healthier and happier when we are not caught up in resistance, there is a physiological reason resistance is challenging to overcome.

From an article on managing resistance to change in corporations:

Research on the function of the brain shows that resistance is not only a psychological reaction to change but actually a physiological reaction (see the “The Neuroscience of Leadership” by David Rock and Jeffrey Schwartz for more information).

To act in a new way requires more power from the brain. The physiological reaction when presented with a new way of doing something is to revert back to what the brain already knows. Human beings can adapt their behavior, but it is a difficult and painful process—even for the brain itself.

It is important to realize that when your brain is under stress, it is more resistant to change. “Protective” mode (sympathetic nervous system) is not as open to learning or changing.

Fortunately, your brain is more receptive to change when it is involved in learning new things—from playing an instrument, to taking dance lessons.

This week, be open to myriad opportunities you have to get involved in learning something new. It takes less power overall, and it will certainly make your life more pleasant!
