Prevention is Best

One thing is clear: Antibiotics change the makeup of your insides.

America’s Obesity Epidemic May Be Caused By Its Favorite Drug

By Susan Scutti,  Newsweek, November 29, 2013

While it is likely more than one single dynamic is at play, there is a growing interest in noticing that antibiotics might be contributing to (if not causing) the epidemic numbers of obese children.

As early as 1954, observations were made about weight gain following the administration of antibiotics. “Navy recruits given daily doses of penicillin to prevent strep infections gained 4.8 pounds over seven weeks compared with the 2.7 pounds gained by participants given a placebo.”

Boys treated with antibiotics during their first year of life reported higher body mass index (BMI) between the ages of 5 and 8 than boys who had not been similarly treated.

While you cannot unhappen history, and it is good to know that balance of the good intestinal bacteria can be regained, there are also some basic rules of good hygiene that can help you stay healthy and avoid taking antibiotics.

Drink plenty of fluids, get extra rest, eat whole foods, take vitamins and minerals, and stay at home if you think you might be coming down with a bug.

Here are 12 tips to prevent cold and flu, and also some insight about when it is good to not treat a symptom.

Remember to use soap and water to wash your hands frequently, following these hand washing tips: come from the Center for Disease Control:

  • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold) and apply soap.
  • Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  • Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  • Rinse your hands well under running water.
  • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

This week,  be aware it is always better to prevent a health problem than to treat one. Go to the gym, or dance around your living room. Get active and stay healthy. Encourage others to do the same.
