Pachamama

Debra’s Wellness Tips

A celebration of mothers has been part of human history for a very long time. The ancient Greek and Roman traditions are an example of that. In the U.S., “Mother’s Day” has been celebrated since 1906.

Not every individual had a perfect relationship with a physical mother.

Fortunately, some cultures honor “mother” as Mother Earth. Pachamama is a goddess revered by the indigenous people of the Andes. She is also known as the earth/time mother. In Inca mythology, Pachamama is a fertility goddess who presides over planting and harvesting, embodies the mountains, and causes earthquakes.

This week, regardless of your current or past relationship with your physical mother, we have so much to appreciate about everything that supports our life. We have friends and food, animals and air, mind and money. Even when everything is not perfect, we can celebrate what we have right now that is sustaining us. Mothering goes far beyond the physical.
