Sacred Stories
When I sat six boxes of Nips on the counter at the local Walgreens, the cashier said, “You must really like these.”
“I can’t easily get them while I am in Florida, so I like to stock up. They are only 30 calories. A great way to calm cravings,” I responded.
“My grandma loved them….” her voice trailed off. “She passed away last June.”
“Are you Hispanic?” I asked, and she nodded her head yes. “You are so fortunate your culture honors our loved ones continuing to be with us. Day of the dead…. Your culture knows you don’t have to wait until you die to be together.” I smiled.
As she put the boxes in my bag she continued, “My daughter is nine months old. My friend and I were driving and my daughter was just smiling sitting in her car seat in the back. I told my friend she does that a lot. My friend said it is probably my grandma….”
How wonderful to share this truth with one another. We were not strangers. Nips and her grandma had brought us together.
Thank you, Grandma….
