Yoga is in the news again!
In the 1980s I first learned yoga was considered the most effective approach for relief of back pain. Most surprisingly, that report was from the Texas Back Institute, at that time one of the nations’ largest back surgical institutions.
In 2017, CBS News reported “Yoga may be as good a treatment for back pain as physical therapy.”
Dr. Robert Saper at Boston Medical Center is one of the authors. He explained the results.
“Yoga was as effective as physical therapy for reducing pain intensity,” Saper said. “Perhaps most importantly reducing pain medication use.”
Saper says yoga likely works by strengthening core and lower back muscles and helping with mind-body relaxation.

That said, not all yoga classes or instructors are created equal. In yoga, just as in pantyhose, there is no one-size-fits-all. I would encourage you to look for classes in “Hatha Yoga” or “Gentle Yoga” or “Restorative Yoga.”
This week, make it a priority to check out for yourself why all the buzz about yoga.
