It comes as no surprise that many people are taking medications with side effects. More than one-third of U.S. adults are taking prescription medications that may lead to depression. An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association warns that depression is a potential side effect of more than 200 commonly prescribed medications, including beta blockers for blood pressure, birth control pills, antacids, and painkillers.
The researchers found that 37 percent of Americans are taking at least one these drugs. The likelihood of depression also increased the more drugs people used.
Because many people see specialists who are not looking at the whole person and everything involved in the life of that individual, it is vital you know history, read the labels of medications you are prescribed, and take appropriate action if you experience side effects.
I am very grateful I have a family practitioner who listens to and respects me. She works with manual medicine (Osteopathic treatments including spinal adjustments, craniosacral, and myofacial release) rather than just prescribing meds.
This week, take responsibility as the head of your health-care team. Ask questions about potential side effects as they are related to your personal history. Pay very close attention to your moods and meds!
