Latitude Matters

Debra’s Wellness Tips

“We have quantitated the ability of adequate amounts of vitamin D to prevent all types of invasive cancer combined, which had been terra incognita until publication of this paper,” said Cedric Garland, DrPH, adjunct professor in the UC San Diego School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine and Public Health and member of Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. (See Science Daily, April 6, 2016)

Dr. Garland first noticed back in the 1980’s people living in high latitudes (where they experienced less sunlight) had higher rates of colon cancer. Exposure to sunshine allows the body to produce Vitamin D. After the initial observation of the link to deficiencies of Vitamin D with colon cancer Dr. Garland, and his late brother, also found the same implications in breast cancer, lung cancer, and bladder cancer.

You can watch an interview with Dr. Garland in which he reports people safely take up to 10,000 units of Vitamin D. The interviewer stresses the importance of doing regular testing to be sure what your exact serum levels are. Dr. Garland says the safe and effective concentrations of 25(OH)D are a minimum of 40 ng/ml. These numbers or the facts behind the suggestions may be a bit foreign to us, but most importantly and easily understand, Garland said a broad effort to increase in the Vitamin D levels in the general population would likely and substantially reduce cancer incidence and associated mortality.

Since I am not a doctor, and only a doctor can prescribe, let me say flat out that I am not suggesting you do anything other than check out the facts about the amounts of Vitamin D that can prevent cancer for yourself.

This week, become your own best health advocate. Read. Watch videos. Pay attention to the good information that comes to you. Take appropriate action. You deserve the best of information and a healthy life!
