Know Yourself: Live Better

I was reading an article on the health benefits of walking and came across information about a gadget with the tag line of “Know Yourself: Live Better.” If you want to invest $129.99 you can purchase a product called UP™ that claims to monitor your every movement, day or night, waking or sleeping. This is from the ad: UP™ is a system that takes a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. The wristband tracks your movement and sleep in the background. The app displays your data, lets you add things like meals and mood, and delivers insights that keep you moving forward.

While all of this is very worthwhile, this tip is not a pitch for that product. It is, rather, a profound truth that as you come to know yourself, you do live better.

It is important to know the things that trigger self-sabotage. It is helpful to know the ways you are motivated to move forward. It is vital to pay attention to what is happening physically and mentally as well as emotionally and spiritually. Do you know the signs of spiritual crisis? One quick key is to notice anywhere you may have been holding someone else accountable for the way you think or feel.

Thinking patterns can be subtle. It may be as simple as the sense something is all up to you, or the feeling you have to do it all by yourself. We did not do something wrong to have these patterns come into play. These beliefs originate in our developing states. Fortunately, your real well-being flows naturally from living life. A simple litmus test for well-being is found in the words of Dawna Markova in her poem titled, I Will Not Die an Unlived Life.

I will not die an unlived life.

I will not live in fear

Of falling or catching on fire.

I choose to inhabit my days

To allow my living to open me,

To make me less afraid,

More accessible

To loosen my heart

Until it becomes a wing,

A torch, a promise.

I choose to risk my significance,

To Live

So that which came to me as seed goes to the next as blossom

And that which came to me as blossom, goes on as fruit.

This week, notice what happens when you adopt the motto of UP™ to know yourself and live better so each seed of well-being blossoms and goes on as fruit in you, your workplace, your home, your community, and your world.
