In a January 3, 2014 post, G. E. Miller of 20 Something Finance, reported that 85.8 percent of males and 66.5 percent of females in the U.S. work more than 40 hours per week. From “The U.S. is the Most Overworked Developed Nation in the World-When do we Draw the Line?”, comes a not-at-all surprising commentary:
But for many of us, more work leads to more stress and a lower quality of life. Without time to unwind, take care of your home, spend time with loved ones, enjoy our hobbies, connect with friends, and generally live a more balanced life. Stress is the #1 cause of health problems – mentally and physically. And there are few things that stress us out on a consistent basis like work does, especially when it takes away from all of the other things that life has to offer.
I love this tattered Ziggy cartoon. It has been on my bulletin board, under glass on my desk, and in my “cartoon file” for well over twenty years. I would guess most of us can relate to having so much to do.Here are six simple ways for you can discover (or rediscover!) how nice it is to just BE:
- Listen to relaxation music or inspirational audios while you commute.
- Keep (and use) an essential oil in your purse, desk drawer, or brief case.
- When weather permits, enjoy your lunch out-of-doors.
- Choose a recliner or a chair with a foot stool when you have the opportunity.
- If you are a side sleeper, take a few moments to relax on your back with a pillow under your legs before you roll over to fall asleep at night.
- Pause to watch a sunset, or get up early enough to see a sunrise. It only takes a moment to have a sense of the larger scheme of things.
This week, BE aware that all of our doing is simply an excuse for human beings to remember what has lasting value. No widget you make is eternal, however, the kindness you extend to yourselves has a ripple effect. As Ziggy says, “With so much to do, sometimes its nice just to BE!!”
