In his new book, The Dorito Effect: The Surprising New Truth About Food and Flavor, Toronto food writer Mark Shatzker says people eat the bad stuff — the McDonald’s fries, the Krispy Kreme donuts, the Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos — because it’s chemically engineered to taste really, really good. Five-ingredient rule. If there are more than five ingredients listed, find another option.
Three-color plate. Satisfy your appetite more with less by colorful selections; a few apple slices, a handful of nuts, and a small square of dark chocolate (rather than a candy bar).
Be ready to eat well. Keep veggies cleaned and in the fridge. Wash and freeze seedless grapes so you can have a few when you have a hunger for a bite of something sweet.
Know your trigger foods. If it is ice cream or cookies, chips or pretzels, know what foods are most difficult for you to resist and resist having them in your home.
