Most people know the importance of cardiovascular training and strength building exercises, but as people age, joints really need flexibility exercises. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, flexibility training is often overlooked.
The best flexibility training includes stretches that are held for 10-30 seconds, such as in yoga or pilates.
These important tips from the National Institutes of Health will allow you to take good care of your joints safely:
-
Warm up before you stretch.
Stretch slowly and gently.
Breathe into your stretch.
Relax and hold.
Don’t bounce.
If you feel pain, go easier on the stretch, breathe deeply and relax into it.
This week, make a commitment to becoming more flexible. Get your joints in motion. Do it safely so you will find the health and freedom that come from your daily stretching.
