Berries are known to be rich in phytochemicals. Berries are found in varying sizes and colors, but most come berry-ing great health benefits!
The “official” definition of “berry” references a simple fruit (having seeds and pulp) that comes from an individual ovary. A good example is the grape. When you think about a grape, it is obvious that the ovary wall ripens and is edible.
Berries are generally round or oval; contain juice as well as pulp and seeds; do not have a stone or pit; and come in many bright colors. Most folks in North America enjoy red and black raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries on a regular basis during the summer months.
While it may surprise you, a tomato is a berry! Tomatoes can be eaten, but other berries in that same family, including the fruit from the deadly nightshade, are toxic to humans.
Botanical berries might surprise you, too. Bananas, watermelons, and pumpkins fall into this category, and the avocado is a one-seeded berry.
Technically speaking, oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits, and kumquats, are berries, too.
This week, enjoy some berries. As you do, be aware of the amazing world we all live in, a world where so many good things bring us benefits for life!
