Inflammation down? Thumbs up!

An anti-inflammatory diet is a very good over-all prevention strategy for wellness, but food choices designed to lower inflammation may be the crucial component of less joint and muscle pain for those with symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Here are some simple, yet substantial, ways we can all get that inflammation level down:

  • Get healthy fats from avocados and olive oil
  • Avoid red meat and butter
  • Eat plenty of fresh fruits
  • Skip those sugary baked goods
  • Substitute chia seeds for eggs
  • Get healthy omega 3 fatty acids from nuts

According to a 2008 study in the Netherlands, published in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition, foods high that are high on the glycemic index  contribute to inflammation. For every 10-point increase in a diet’s glycemic status, there was a 29% rise in C-reactive protein—the protein produced by the liver that rises when there is inflammation throughout the body.

Saturated fats have also been shown to increase inflammation, and food sensitivities stress the immune system, creating antibodies that start the inflammation cycle. You can avoid the foods that are most likely to trigger sensitivities: eggs and wheat, sugar and dairy, citrus, caffeine and soy. Be sure you pay close attention to labels, as many of these are often used in prepared foods. Watch for the words partially hydrogenated oils, code for trans-fat. Trans-fats cause inflammation because of the energy it takes for the body to break them down.

If you have been experiencing any joint discomfort, or even if you have had a diagnosis and are taking medication or undergoing treatment, consider doing an experiment with foods. If you can do it, give yourself just one month to eliminate these inflammation-increasing foods. See how much better you feel. You can reintroduce food groups one at a time to know what works for you.

This week, make the choices to make a differences in your health and your quality of life.
