Hydration

Summer is always a good time of year to remember the benefits of proper hydration. Half your body weight is made up of water. Water helps your body stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Water takes the waste products out of your body. In fact, every organ and system of the body is dependent upon water.

The Mayo Clinic website suggests the” 8X8″ rule is a generally a good one to go by: drink eight 8 ounce glasses of fluids per day. But, hydration should not just come from liquids. About 20 percent of your fluid intake should come from foods.
Here are a few foods that have an abundance of hydration benefits:

Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Celery
Bell peppers
Romaine
Radishes

You can probably see these are perfect for putting together the makings of a delicious, nutritious salad! For added benefits, enjoy a cup of strawberries or some watermelon for dessert.

Water has been an important symbol throughout history. It is used in Christian baptism, pagan fertility rites, and in Buddhist funerals water is poured over the edge of a bowl as this prayer is said, “As the rains fill the rivers and overflow into the ocean, so likewise may what is given here reach the departed.”

This week, think about the many ways water supports you physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. We bathe in it, we swim in it, we love hearing it flowing over rocks, and it makes up almost 60 percent of our bodies. No wonder it is wise to be well hydrated at all times!
