Hydrate for Health

Debra’s Wellness Tips

Hydration is essential for life. The need for adequate hydration increases with warmer weather, so for those of us in the Northern hemisphere, this is a good time to pay attention to your fluids. Some beverages hydrate the body and some can contribute to dehydration.

Drink plenty of water, for sure, and for exertion or prolonged exposure to heat consider adding sports drinks for extra sodium and potassium.  One benefit of sports drinks is that they reach the bloodstream more quickly than water. This is because they contain dissolved minerals (including sodium) and carbohydrates. Caffeine (colas, teas, coffee) tends to draw fluid out of the body. If you drink fruit juices, mix juice with 50% water.

Being properly hydrated avoids muscle cramps and serious health risks. If you suspect someone is dehydrated, seek medical attention.

Signs of dehydration include:

  • fatigue
  • loss of appetite
  • flushed skin
  • heat intolerance
  • light-headedness
  • dark-colored urine
  • dry cough

This week, keep yourself well hydrated. While you are cooling off with proper fluids, be aware of keeping a cool head emotionally as well. Drink in plenty of gratitude. Let yourself enjoy the pause that refreshes!
