According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), February is heart health month. Most of us know the symptoms of a heart attack:
- Chest pain or discomfort (sometimes feels like severe heartburn).
- Pain radiating down the arms or across the shoulder.
- Shortness of breath.
- Pain in the jaw (thought to be the least recognized symptom), neck, or mid-to-upper back.
- Nausea, weakness, or lightheadedness.
While knowing the symptoms of a heart attack is important for all of us, choosing a lifestyle that promotes good heart health is vital. Here are some simple reminders, that put into practice can result in your living longer, healthier lives:
- If you have been a smoker, become a former smoker now. (contact Debra for help using hypnosis and guided imagery)
- Maintain or attain a healthy body weight. (buy and use a copy of the Enjoying Your Ideal Weight CD or download the audio)
- Eat well (think fresh and raw) to manage blood pressure and lower blood sugar.
- Get active. Even moderate exercise regularly has been shown to reduce risk.
In addition to your developing good physical heart health habits, think about having a four-chambered heart and reflect on these emotional aspects of a healthy heart: Where am I half-hearted rather than full-hearted? Have I been closed-hearted rather than open-hearted? Was I acting weak-hearted rather than strong-hearted? How might I have been confused or doubting in my heart rather than clear-hearted? As anthropologist, Angeles Arrien says, “A healthy heart weans itself from half-hearted, weak-hearted, closed-hearted and confused-hearted ways.”
This week, notice the ways you feel, think, act, and believe which lead you to good heart health.
