Good Heart Health

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), February is heart health month. Most of us know the symptoms of a heart attack:

  • Chest pain or discomfort (sometimes feels like severe heartburn).
  • Pain radiating down the arms or across the shoulder.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Pain in the jaw (thought to be the least recognized symptom), neck, or mid-to-upper back.
  • Nausea, weakness, or lightheadedness.

While knowing the symptoms of a heart attack is important for all of us, choosing a lifestyle that promotes good heart health is vital. Here are some simple reminders, that put into practice can result in your living longer, healthier lives:

  1. If you have been a smoker, become a former smoker now. (contact Debra for help using hypnosis and guided imagery)
  2. Maintain or attain a healthy body weight. (buy and use a copy of the Enjoying Your Ideal Weight CD or download the audio)
  3. Eat well (think fresh and raw) to manage blood pressure and lower blood sugar.
  4. Get active. Even moderate exercise regularly has been shown to reduce risk.

In addition to your developing good physical heart health habits, think about having a four-chambered heart and reflect on these emotional aspects of a healthy heart: Where am I half-hearted rather than full-hearted?  Have I been closed-hearted rather than open-hearted?  Was I acting weak-hearted rather than strong-hearted? How might I have been confused or doubting in my heart rather than clear-hearted?  As anthropologist, Angeles Arrien says, “A healthy heart weans itself from half-hearted, weak-hearted, closed-hearted and confused-hearted ways.”

This week, notice the ways you feel, think, act, and believe which lead you to good heart health.
