Obsession—the voice of fear—seeks to fix and control, not to attend to. It is a very different action to attend to a situation or a person.
I am reminded of the story of the young boy that would often accompany an elder neighbor on his morning walk. The little boy’s mother asked him what he does with the old man as they walk. “I help him cry.”
Sometimes the most loving attention is to simply be with another.
