When legendary swimmer, Michael Phelps, jumped into the pool to win his 19th Olympic Gold Medal, he did so with peculiar round blotches on his back. Thankfully, an online news article cleared up any questions about it by explaining the ancient art of cupping.
Cupping is a process by which glass cups are applied to the skin along the meridians of the body, creating suction as a way of stimulating the flow of energy. This might be done to promote relief from a sore shoulder, or an achy low back.
According to WebMD, the following are listed as benefits of cupping therapy:
Blood disorders such as anemia and hemophilia
Rheumatic diseases such as arthritis and fibromyalgia
Fertility and gynecological disorders
Skin problems such as eczema and acne
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Migraine
Anxiety and depression
Bronchial congestion caused by allergies and asthma
Varicose veins
Supporters also believe that cupping therapy can reduce pain and inflammation throughout the body. And they say it can promote mental and physical relaxation and well-being. Naysayers claim the benefit is only placebo effect, and that there is no solid research. Newsweek offered a pretty balanced view, unlike some articles, if you are interested in reading a bit more.
This week, push your own thought process to consider possible benefits to situations in your current life. If something as ancient and simple as applying glass cups along the meridians of your body can be embraced by Olympic athletes, perhaps we can all be served by expanding our options and enjoying relief!
