Sleep disturbances can be associated with short-term circumstances, but longer-term sleep disturbance may be a result of “circadian rhythm disorder.”
Some people become night owls, staying up late and have difficulty waking up in the morning. Teens often have this happen.
Older adults can find themselves too tired too early, going to sleep early and waking well before daylight.
Sufficient, restorative sleep is essential for a healthy immune system, so persistence in your finding a solution is important, even though finding a solution can be challenging.
Perhaps you have heard about taking melatonin supplements. Melatonin taken upon waking in the morning can allow for a later bedtime that evening. Melatonin used in the afternoon can invite an earlier bedtime. See Too Tired Too Early?.
If you are having difficulty staying awake into the evening, and waking up much earlier than desired, you may have an advanced sleep phase disorder. If a circadian rhythm disorder is resulting in damage to your work or social activities, or in increased daytime sleepiness due to an insufficient amount of sleep, arrange an evaluation with a sleep professional rather than experimenting with unproven treatments or struggling to get through your day. It may result in you being alert and up and about when the sun shines, and joining your peers in the Land of Nod when the stars twinkle in the nighttime sky.
This week, pay attention to your sleep habits. Take steps so you are able to experience restful nights and productive days. “Sleep that knits up the ravell’d sleeve of care..” ~ Shakepeare
