Changes for a Lifetime

Debra’s Wellness Tips
January, for many of us, means going on a diet. Better yet, this is a great time to make life-style changes for a lifetime.

How to Make Healthful Dietary Changes Last a Lifetime,” by Michael O. Schroeder, looks at ways to ensure your new healthful eating pattern sticks – long term.

Pick a winner:
Have you heard about the MIND diet? MIND (an acronym that stands for the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) is a “hybrid of the Mediterranean diet and DASH diet, and research suggests it may reduce the risk of developing dementia or slow the decline in brain health,” says Becky Kerkenbush, RD, a clinical dietitian with Watertown Regional Medical Center in Watertown, Wisconsin. (See Can this diet plan help reverse Alzheimers disease?)

Make it convenient:
Do some food prep so you have easy meal starters. Have fresh veggies prepared and in the fridge. Keep boiled eggs on hand. The same is true with chicken breasts. When I buy ground beef, I saute it with onions, drain it, and freeze it in half-pound packages. It is perfect for making a last-minute meal. Chicken breasts are sliced into medallions, strips, and cubes, ready for stir fry or soup or simmering with lots of yummy veggies. The work you do upfront, pays off big time.

Go where the good food is:
If you are going to dine out, choose a location with plenty of healthy options. From the raw materials to the cooking style, it makes a difference. Avoid fast food that is unhealthy, and support the good choices you are making at home when you don’t.

Eat regular meals:
It is easy to consume too much food when you have allowed yourself to become too hungry. Live with HALT – never let yourself be too hungry, too angry, too lonely, or too tired.

Save room for dessert:
By giving yourself permission for a healthy dessert, you can feel less deprived and more satiated. Rather than eat until you are full, save room for dessert.

This week, look at the lifestyle that will support your living a long and healthy life. In addition to what, when, where, and how we eat, we can add enjoyable exercise habits and learn coping strategies that are not food related. Take a bubble bath!
