Feeling the Heat

Debra and I spent the last week of August in San Antonio, Texas, at the Healing Touch Program Worldwide Conference. Because we had a lot of stuff (primarily manuals and CDs) we needed to take, we drove from Michigan. The drive took two days, with the second day starting just east of the Mississippi River. We went past Little Rock, Arkansas, Texarkana, Dallas, and Austin before reaching San Antonio. We had a good view of the Texas drought.

Although we had seen TV coverage of the drought, that’s not the same as seeing the effect on the land while driving through. From Texarkana on, we could see the vegetation drying up and disappearing by the mile, with rivers and streams increasingly replaced by dry beds that once carried water. From midmorning on, the dash thermometer registered in the triple-digit range, often as high as 109 degrees. What cattle there were huddled under whatever shade they could find. San Antonio was hot, too. We needed to get out before sunrise to exercise with some degree of comfort. While we were there, San Antonio set at least one 50-year record for high temperature of 112. It was hot. The hotel air conditioning couldn’t keep up. Even with the temperature in the meeting rooms set for 65 degrees, the best the AC could do was 77.

This was our first time attending the Healing Touch Program Worldwide Conference. Debra has been a member of Healing Touch International since earning certification. When the split occurred between HTI and HTP, she (and many others) elected to join both groups. We attended because another Healing Touch Practitioner wasn’t able to attend and suggested that we submit a proposal. We submitted two: “Cool Responses to Heated Discussions,” based primarily on NLP strategies, and “Mind-Body Miracles: Surgical Support Secrets Revealed,” based on a combination of Energy Medicine, NLP, and hypnosis. For more information, see http://imaginehealing.info (for patients) and http://surgicalsupport.info (for professionals). Both proposals were accepted.

The conference itself was well-planned and well-managed. Both Debra and I were impressed by the attendees and the presentations. One of the things that surprised me was the number of those who were trained in Healing Touch also had at least some training in NLP and hypnosis (AKA “guided imagery”). In addition to nurses, HT Practitioners, and massage therapists, the attendees included a number of Ph.D.s, primarily in engineering and the so-called “hard” sciences. It was easy to find good conversation.

One of the things that most impressed me was a presentation by Dr. Mary Jo Bulbrook, who demonstrated a way to eliminate the negative effects of trauma energetically. I have always used some form of the Fast Phobia Cure of NLP (originally described in Use Your Brain for a Change, by Richard Bandler) because I found it easy, quick, and effective. I was not expecting to witness how quickly and easily the sense of trauma could be eliminated using only the techniques of Energy Medicine. The subject was an attendee who had not known Mary Jo previously, and I had sufficient opportunity to talk with him afterwards to have confidence that the elimination of his sense of trauma was real and would last. As is true of the Fast Phobia Cure, the individual doesn’t have to provide details about what happened. Everything that needs to happen, happens at the energetic level. I was impressed. It is a technique I intend to learn.

So … it was a hot week in more ways than one. That many practitioners of Energy Medicine in one location change the vibration of the environment. In case you’re wondering, the ratio of women to men was high. In the evolution of humanity, men have tended to be the builders and the soldiers; women have tended to be the healers. One of the things I appreciated was that those in attendance—women and men—focused on the “energy” of others rather than on the superficials of achievement. No one wore a suit and tie….

And I intend to go back next year, when it will again be in San Antonio…. I will hope for rain in Texas between now and then.
