Beat the Blahs & Much More

Barry Bittman, M.D., is CEO and Medical Director of the Mind-Body Wellness Center in Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he has pioneered a new paradigm for treating the whole person. He and Bernie Siegel, M.D., developed a program (Insights for Living Beyond Cancer) that brings Western medicine into partnership with the power of mind, body, and spirit.

When I met Barry Bittman, M.D., I literally heard beautiful music. That is because he is a doctor on a mission: using science to prove the benefits of drumming. And the science has been doing that quite well. Some of the proven benefits include:

  • Significant increases in immune function
  • Employee burnout and turnover reduction
  • Reduction of student drop-out rate
  • Reversal in genetic switches believed to cause common diseases
  • Improved creativity and bonding in seniors
  • Quality of life improvements in at-risk adolescents

These are exciting facts. If drumming can produce such health benefits for body and soul, we may well be making progress in recognizing the importance of many valuable ways of restoring whole-person health.
