Be Aware!

Recently there have been a couple of significant lawsuits won against big food manufactures for using words like “natural” or “healthy” to market high sugar or other toxic substances.

Food activists have been on a bit of winning spree this month. First, on July 3, Naked Juice agreed to pay $9 million after it was sued for using the term “all natural” on the labels of juices containing ingredients like cyanocobalamin, Fibersol®-2 and pyridoxine hydrochloride. It also agreed to remove the claims from its packaging. Less than two weeks later, on July 15, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) secured a settlement with Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, under which it would stop fortifying 7UP with Vitamin E and marketing the beverage as a source of “antioxidants.”  Three days later, CSPI announced another win: a judge allowed a lawsuit against vitaminwater to go forward, letting plaintiffs challenge its health claims (including that the sugary beverage supported “optimal immune function,” could increase endurance, and reduced the risk of eye disease).

While it may be true that it is not likely this will change the industry significantly immediately, it is really helpful because it reminds each of us to be aware of what we are ingesting.

You may be familiar with the saying that “man does not live by bread alone.” In the same way that it is wise to be aware what we are really eating (regardless of what we are being told), it is also vital that you are able to discern toxic opinions, attitudes, and information. Many times, the way something is communicated can create the sense of truth or honesty or integrity that just might not be there.

This week, decide that you are making awareness your personal goal. Notice—without having to waste energy on judging something right or wrong or good or bad—the ways you can make a choice for what truly nurtures you in body, mind, and spirit.
