Avoid Getting R.I.P. Offs

It is my intention to share optimistic, helpful, innovative information with you. This tip is all of that, even if it is a bit unique, based on an article in the June AARP Magazine. Since many of my readers are not recipients of that, here is a helpful recap of the tips on how to prevent the identity of a deceased loved one from being stolen.

Thieves raked in over $70 million in refunds from 19,000 federal income tax returns in 2011 alone. This is a huge problem we can all help solve.

According to R.I.P. Off, by Sid Kirchheimer (author of Scam-Proof Your Life), when a loved one dies, here is how to block ID theft:

  1. Omit birthdate, place of birth, and last address or job in obituaries.

  2. Send death certificates, requesting a “deceased alert” be placed on the credit report, to the three main credit reporting bureaus.

  3. Report the death to the Social Security Administration and notify the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

  4. Mail copies of the death certificate to all financial companies, asking accounts to be closed.

  5. Check the credit report for several months to make sure you have protected your loved one from fraud.

This week, feel the relief knowledge provides. You really can prevent stress. And living with less stress means you can be healthier in the long run!
