All in the Family

This week we will explore something we may not know much about. At least most of us don’t think about food families, beyond the basics of “dairy products” or “meats” or “fruits.” For sure I had not given a lot of thought to food reactions that come from consuming foods in the same family. The theory is that eating foods in the same family day after day can trigger subtle allergies and create hormonal imbalances that trigger cravings for the reaction-causing foods.

Most of us to some extent already recognize this dynamic with sugar—the spike in blood sugar followed by the drop, like the ups and downs of a roller-coaster. This is just the opposite of what happens when a healthy person is eating foods that do not cause these subtle allergic reactions: You eat something, your body knows you have eaten; you get energy from the food, and you feel satiated.

It appears these food reactions don’t just cause craving, they can also slow down the way your body metabolizes everything you eat, cause hypoglycemia, and increase cortisol (causing weight gain).

According to Elson Haas, M.D., author of False Fat Diet, some people will need to avoid entire families of foods, while others will discover which foods within a family to avoid. If you have a strong reaction to a food, the likelihood that you may have sensitivity to other foods in that family may be greater.

Haas suggests waiting a couple of days before eating another food from the same family. Here are some members of a food family (plum) that might surprise you: plum, prune, cherry, almond, peach, and nectarine. Other surprises include finding licorice in the legume family, avocado and cinnamon in the Laurel family,  and Jerusalem artichokes in the sunflower family.

This week, pay attention to the way the foods you eat make you feel. If it makes sense to you, find out more about this. According to Haas, food reactions cause your heart rate to increase, and we know that is not good over time. As with any new information, do your own research and make choices that truly are good for your health.
