It may come as a surprise that you can do a lot to lower your A1C. The A1C test (also known as HbA1C, glycated hemoglobin or glycosylated hemoglobin) measures a person’s average blood glucose level over the past few months. A home glucose meter is testing the current level of blood sugar. While experts disagree somewhat on what the A1C target should be, “The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends an A1C target of less than or equal to 7 percent. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommends a level of 6.5 percent or below.” (See Diabetes and A1C Levels.)
There are natural ways people with prediabetes can lower their blood sugar. Two things on that list are to make sure you get adequate sleep and eat foods rich in chromium. “Chromium is essential to healthy cellular function and helps insulin function as it should. The exact mechanism is not entirely known, but inadequate levels of chromium can interfere with healthy glucose metabolism. You can get your daily does of chromium from broccoli, oats, barley, and tomatoes.”
We might all do well to do what we can to stay well by lowering any high blood sugar levels. If you haven’t yet oven roasted broccoli, give that a whirl. I toss it in a small amount of olive oil mixed with some seasonings: onion powder, garlic powder, a hint of cayenne, and a sprinkle of sea salt. Roast it on a baking pan until it is the way you like it. I like it a bit crunchy. Yummy….
This week, make the choices that are easiest which give you the greatest health benefits. It is easier than you think.
