Relief for Heel Spurs and Plantar Fasciitis

Debra’s Wellness Tips

This tip was inspired by my sister-in-law, Cindy, who has been suffering with discomfort from heel spurs and plantar fasciitis for some time now. Her question to me was simply, “What can be done to eliminate the pain and create healing?”

With a quick internet search, we soon saw videos, read websites, and had the assurance lots can be done to provide relief.

According to Dr. Andrew Weil:

A heel spur (or osteophyte) is a small bony growth or collection of bony growths on the back or underside of the heel. They may or may not cause pain, and patients often confuse heel spurs with a related condition known as plantar fasciitis – inflammation of the band of tissue that stretches from the ball of the foot to the heel, forming the arch. Many people have a bone spur without ever knowing it, and about 70 percent of patients with plantar fasciitis who do have discomfort will also be found to have a heel spur when observed via X-ray. It is likely that a bone spur forms as the body tries to repair itself from repeated injury by laying down extra bone at the site of trauma. Plantar fasciitis is typically another result of such trauma. Heel spurs are most often seen in middle-aged men and women, but can be found in all age groups.

If you or someone you know has suffered from heel spurs or plantar fasciitis, for sure you will want to check out some of the many instructional videos about kinesio taping. Kinesio taping allowed a friend of mine to run a half marathon with a cracked rib. I am not advocating either, but Kim Hales’ husband (Doctorate of Physical Therapy) calls this simply taping for heel spurs.

This week, begin by just acknowledging the many noninvasive approaches to healing well worth doing. We are very fortunate to be living in the information age!
