Debra’s Wellness Tips

In a recent article, Huffington Post listed ten reasons to do yoga as undeniable. While I agree with all ten, I would also suggest there are some important dont’s, as well as do’s, about your developing a yoga practice.

For example, it is really tempting to look at other people in postures and determine you can’t do yoga. The truth is, you will gain flexibility, strength, endurance, balance, and relaxation by moving just the way you are able to move right now.

Sometimes people try to practice on their own from the start. While most yogis are able to benefit just as well from doing their own routines, it often takes some instruction with a skilled yoga instructor to reach that level of expertise to practice well on your own.

Another caution is trying too hard. Yoga is a life style of being present in the moment. That means breathing through and overcoming the tendency to overdo.

I had finished my routine, and I was covered with a light blanket relaxing in rest pose, when my adult daughter came into the room. “I can do yoga!” she exclaimed. She was right, of course, but even resting your mind as you rest your body takes practice.

Worry less about the fancy workout clothes or classes with frills. Set a strong intention, start networking, schedule time for you, and reap the rewards.

This week, check out your local yoga class options. It may stretch you in all the right ways! Remember, there are at least ten undeniable benefits when you enjoy an ongoing yoga practice.
