According to the Townsend Letter: The Examiner of Alternative Medicine (Issue #401December 2016), your motivation for helping others makes a difference as to how much health benefit you derive from helping others.

Those who volunteered for “other-oriented,” altruistic reasons had a decreased mortality risk. The authors say that the health benefits of altruistic service may stem from “a sense of deep and lasting well-being originating from service to something bigger than the self.”
