Sinusitis

Debra’s Wellness Tips

Allergies, colds, and sinus infections are not pleasant. Allergies result from exposure to particles like dust or pollen. The allergic response is a direct result of exposure. A runny nose, scratchy throat, and nonstop sneezing are the signs of a cold. Colds can be caused by viruses. Viruses can also cause a sinus infection.

A sinus infection, also called sinusitis, affects the cavities around your nasal passages. The infection causes your sinuses to become inflamed and swollen. The swelling makes it hard for your sinuses to drain, and mucus builds up. You become congested and have trouble breathing through your nose. Sinusitis often causes thick yellow or green nasal discharge. A sore throat, cough or headache, as well as pressure or tenderness around your eyes, cheeks, nose or forehead, may also accompany sinusitis. In most cases, viruses cause sinusitis.

These viral infections usually go away on their own within a week to 10 days.

Self-care measures such as plenty of rest and fluids can help prevent or treat sinusitis.

Bromelain, sold as a supplement (a protein found in pineapple stems) has been used by prize fighters to reduce swelling in the nasal passages. As with other supplements, talk to your doctor first, to be sure there is no adverse interaction with other medications you’re taking. And be sure to follow exact dosing instructions.

Warm compresses, spicy foods, essential oils (eucalyptus, pine or rosemary, peppermint), acupressure points (the bridge of your nose, the indentation of your upper eye socket, where the bridge of the nose meets the ridge of your eyebrows) are all recognized as appropriate interventions for sinusitis.

If sinusitis persists longer than 10 days or is accompanied by a fever, your doctor might refer you to an ENT.

This week, do everything you can to keep yourself healthy and use natural healing methods to regain your health whenever you can do that. It is wonderful that we have so many good choices.
