Safe Cleaning Hints

Recently I had the adventure of staying somewhere when it was discovered one of the rooms had bedbugs! They were confined to that one room, but everyone was encouraged to take precautions, so as not to inadvertently carry bugs or larva home with luggage or bedding or shoes.

Reluctant to use toxic chemicals, I got great information and products at the health food store! While we prefer to not think about such things, it is most important to know healthy options exist so this tip is dedicated to safe cleaning hints!

Safely Dealing With Pests

Diatomaceous Earth (often referred to as “DE”) is an off white talc-like powder that is the fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton. I prefer to not harm any living beings, but at those times you have to, safeguard the environment and ask forgiveness. When sprinkled on a bug that has an exoskeleton (such as bed bugs, ants or fleas) it is totally nontoxic.

Safely Cleaning Common Items

Yoga Mat

Yoga mat gets dusty, dirty, and sweaty and we put our hands, feet, and faces on them. Keep a spray bottle of water with two drops of tea tree oil added and wipe down your mat after each use. Tea tree oil is a natural antibacterial and antifungal agent.

Toothbrush

Bacteria love damp places and germs can stay airborne for at least a few hours in your bathroom, so put your tooth brush in the dishwasher once a week.

Baseball Cap

Place caps in the top rack of your dishwasher. Hang them in the shower to dry. They will keep their shape and be completely clean!

Reusable Shopping Bags

Toss your cloth shopping bags in with a load of laundry to feel great about your contribution to our earth and know that you are not carrying around yuckies.

Computer Keyboard

Grab a can of compressed air and blow those crumbs and fuzzes out of your keyboard. While you are at it, use your tea tree spray to wipe down your desktop.

This week, enjoy cleaning with natural and safe products. Sleep tight, and don’t let the bedbugs bite.
