Prevent Swimmer’s Ear

Debra’s Wellness Tips

Pools, lakes, rivers, oceans: Summer is the time for swimming. Unfortunately, sometimes water can get caught in the ear canal, causing Swimmer’s ear. Swimmer’s ear is a bacterial or fungal infection. It can be quite painful, but is easily prevented.

According to a recent MedlinePlus article, the best way to prevent swimmer’s ear is to use the corner of a towel or washcloth to dry the inside of the ear after swimming.

You can also use a hair dryer on a cool setting, placed about 12 inches from the ear.

The article cautions to not use a cotton swab in the ear.

This week, be especially aware of your ears. Notice the sounds around you. Enjoy some music. Pay close attention to your inner listening, too. Sometimes our best intuition comes from having our ears tuned to those subtle messages that come from deep within.
