Pain-Free Without Pills

“Every day, 46 people in the U.S. die from legal pain pills. Here’s how to avoid being a statistic.” This shocking statement is from the September 2014 cover story of Consumer Reports. For a real shock, do an internet search of the words consumer reports pain pills.

Americans have a dangerous relationship with chronic pain, but there are effective and inexpensive nondrug options well worth using. Here are some great suggestions from the article:

Back pain: staying physically active; acupuncture; massage; pilates; tai chi; physical therapy; yoga
Headache pain: diet; exercise; meditation; relaxation therapy
Joint pain: low impact exercise; walking; yoga; stretching
Sore muscles: rest; icing (short periods of time for 24-48 hours); heat; elevation

From my own experience, you can put energy medicine on the top of your list! Names you might easily recognize include Healing Touch™, Reiki, Reflexology, and Acupressure. While it can be pure gift to work with a skilled practitioner, you can learn all of these therapies as self care! Here are just a few of my personal favorite self-healing books:

Acupressure’s Potent Points for Self Care, by Michael Reed Gach

Your Healing Hands: The Polarity Experience, by Richard Gordon

Essential Reiki: A Complete Guide To An Ancient Healing Art, by Diane Stein

Energy Medicine Self Care, by Dr. Mary Jo Bulbrook

I have introduced other therapies and tools—Freedom from Pain audio, aromatherapy, homeopathy, Miracle Balls, hypnosis, etc.—in previous tips for well-being. This week, the most important awareness you can have is better options exist. Call, text, or send email if you would benefit from help finding relief from pain without dangerous medications.
