Mindfulness

Mindfulness is now being hailed as the next exercise frontier. Why? As reported in the November 2014 Scientific American Magazine, meditation boosts focus and eases stress, and actually changes your brain.

Meditation has roots in the contemplative practices of nearly every major religion. The prevalence of meditation in the media has given the word various meanings. We will refer to meditation as the cultivation of basic human qualities, such as a more stable and clear mind, emotional balance, a sense of caring mindfulness, even love and compassion—qualities that remain latent as long as one does not make an effort to develop them. It is also a process of familiarization with a more serene and flexible way of being.

Anderson Cooper dove headfirst into the world of mindfulness in a segment of 60 Minutes. Having learned mindfulness at a retreat, he agreed to be wired up to see what was happening when he practiced.

According to the 60 Minute segment, Congressman Tim Ryan, an Ohio Democrat, attended his first meditation retreat in 2008, “just days after winning a grueling reelection campaign.” Ryan leads meditation sessions in Washington and says he really believes it can change America for the better.

Can you imagine going on retreat and leaving your devices turned off? No phone, no email, no internet. You will be sitting in silence with no place to go and nothing to do. You will eat in silence. You will practice walking meditation—learning to be aware. You will focus on the sensation of breath: in your belly, in your nostrils; breathing in an out.

This week, whatever your previous experience with meditation has been, make a commitment to bring mindfulness into your life more fully. Let me know if you are interested in resources or coaching. The best way to change America is one person at a time….
