Messages Matter

Debra’s Wellness Tips

Admittedly, social media can be a real drain on our time, and most of us are totally put off by the lack of depth or caring that can take place on a public forum, but just as with everything this tool is neutral.

Research is now showing healing benefits of certain types of messages on Facebook.

When someone you care about sends you a personal message, your sense of well-being increases.

The bottom line? “People derive benefits from online communication, as long as it comes from others they care about and has been tailored for them,” the authors wrote. (Something to “Like” about Facebook)

Let your inner sense of connection guide so you know when is the right time to reach out and what to say. I recall a friend having received a diagnosis of breast cancer. I reminded her of all of the difficult things I had seen her overcome (she had a kidney stone surgically removed when she was in her last trimester with twins). Her relief was palpable as she recognized herself as strong.

A timely text, voice, or email message can lift someone’s spirits, provide a much needed word of encouragement, and remind you that someone cares about you.

This week, use every means available to you to help someone else know he or she is not alone. You matter. Messages matter. As Dr. Seuss says, “To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world.”
