Make Music

Long before 8-track, 33 RPM, CDs, or iPods, humans have been moving to (and been moved by) music. Science is now recognizing there is something about toe-tapping sounds that is good for our body, mind, and spirit.

A video on Youtube has been viewed over a million times. Why? Because it reminds us the power of music, and gives us hope that we are intimately connected to sounds in a way that is not only primal, but also therapeutic. An elderly gentleman in a care facility is virtually resurrected by the use of music! The photo above is a snipped shot from the video. I promise it will move you when you see how he is affected by his music. Here is the link to the video: Music and Memory1.

We do not have to wait until things are so extreme. We can make music a standard part of our plan for well-being. Here are some suggestions for your listening pleasure from 12 Ways to Reduce Stress With Music:

  1. Wake up with music rather than an “alarm.” (Cell phones make this very easy for you to do.)
  2. Sing along with music, especially music that is familiar and has meaning for you.
  3. Play/make music with an instrument. (I carry a harmonica with me!)
  4. Create a mantra; a musical prayer or inspiring message. (I am reminded of Karen Drucker’s “All is Well.”)
  5. Exercise to music. (It worked for Richard Simmons!)
  6. Commute to music. (It is amazing how quickly an hour commute flies by when I am singing along with the Beach Boys.)
  7. Work to music that is appropriate for the setting you are in, even if it sometimes means using earbuds.
  8. Select the location for meetings based on the auditory ambiance. Have you noticed some parking lots play music? How cool is that!
  9. Get together with others to share music at a concert or jam session.
  10. Dance! (OK, I confess that I keep a blindfold in my office and sometimes turn on music and trance dance away stress. I am trusting there are no hidden cameras…)

Whatever your favorite tunes, types, or times for listening, this week be intentional to listen and notice the benefits you welcome as you make music a part of your life!
