Sometimes we live long enough to see clearly that an old way was better than a new way. Some of us saw that with “modern math.” We may yet come to recognize that with regards to not teaching children cursive writing. One thing for sure, we already know old-fashioned soap and water is probably more effective and for sure is safer than all the antibacterial soaps.

It is not just soaps—antimicrobial chemicals are often found in other commonly used cosmetics, including toothpaste. There is now plenty of evidence that the chemicals aren’t always effective, and may even be harmful.

Fortunately, there are some wonderful chemical free soaps and cosmetics available, but at the risk of sounding like a sappy commercial, an easy way to make a very inexpensive, yet impressively positive, impact is to use pure Ivory soap!

In addition to the familiar “floating” bar, you can now buy Ivory liquid hand soap. You have to love the lag line: This isn’t your grandmother’ soap. This is your great-great-grandmother’s soap!

This week, be aware of the lure of “new” or “better” that may just not be any improvement at all. Old-fashioned values like honesty and integrity might not be the only choices that are good for our lives….
