Healthy Body Image

Individuals who do not have a healthy body image tend to be less creative, less optimistic, and even less healthy. Everyone loses when anyone holds him- or herself in low esteem.

According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders website:

• Almost 50% of people with eating disorders meet the criteria for depression.
• Only 1 in 10 men and women with eating disorders receive treatment. Only 35% of people that receive treatment for eating disorders get treatment at a specialized facility for eating disorders.
• Up to 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder) in the U.S.
• Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.

Fortunately, for all of us, Ashley Graham has taken being a plus-size model off the runway and onto the platform. She shared inspiring anecdotes during her TED talk, including admitting having been bullied about her body growing up.

“Back in Nebraska, I was known as the ‘fat model.’ The girl who was pretty for a big girl. I hated answering that question, ‘what do you do for a living?’ I would see that person’s eyebrow raise when I say ‘I’m a model.’ I would have to quickly qualify with, ‘Well, I’m a plus size model.'”

Take a lesson from Ashley: “Never let anyone tell you you can’t…” she said. “It is critical that both men and women create a body positive environment. Uplift the important women in your lives, create a safe space for them to express their beauty and feel comfortable embracing their bodies and who they are, not hiding them because of what they’re not, while men can also keep a good diet and an active life for this, and even using supplements as barbarian xl that also help a lot with this.”

If you, or someone you know, has experienced emotional pain around body image, you might want to check out Emotional Freedom Technique (tapping). Think of it as a blend of ancient and modern; oriental medicine (acupressure), and behavioral modification (Cognitive Behavior Therapy). Tapping is easy to do and can provide significant benefits.

This week, let me know if you would like to receive a handout with specific instruction for tapping. A healthy body image is good for women, and men and children, too!
