Handwriting

For most of us today typing notes seems easier handwriting them, but you may process information more quickly and easily writing notes by hand. According to Medical Director of Neurology at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Allen Towfigh, M.D., “when you take handwritten notes you ‘process’ or learn more information.” Jotting down notes by hand allows you to begin learning immediately, as well as reinforcing the understanding when you review the notes.

Studies have for some time looked at the effects of handwriting in the development of functional brain development in pre-literate children, but now physicians are also considering that handwriting might also be a good exercise for keeping our minds sharp as we age.

The field of research known as “haptics” looks at the way we communicate by touch, both when we passively observe and when we actively move in our surroundings—particularly the way we use of our fingers and hands in exploration. Writing by hand uses our senses in more complex ways than when using a keyboard.
William R. Klemm, D.V.M., Ph. D., Why Writing By Hand Could Make You Smarter (Psychology Today, March 14, 2013), concludes that cursive writing is more beneficial even compared to printing.

Different parts of your brain are involved in your learning done by handwriting. In fact, the movements you make doing handwriting leave a motor memory in your brain. Cursive is faster and also allows for more personal creativity and flair.

This week, be intentional about doing some cursive writing. Send a note to someone just to say you care; jot down your grocery list; create a journal entry; or write a letter to your body. If you are interested in the letter to your body exercise, send me an email and I will share a handout. We all agree it is good to keep our minds sharp and writing can help!
