Here in North America, most (if not all) of your friends and neighbors, family and co-workers will be celebrating Independence Day on July 4 with fireworks. Backyards, county parks, even sky-scrapers will reflect flickering lights as the night air is rocked by loud booms.

Fireworks can be anything but pleasant for those who suffer with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and our fur family (dogs) can be downright terrorized. (See “Veterans ask Neighbors to be Respectful of PTSD on July 4”)

If you would appreciate celebrating in some innovative ways that bring peace and harmony to all around you, here are a few thoughtful celebrations!

● Make a trip to a nearby Native American museum. This entire nation was once made up of many individual nations, each worthy of recognition and honoring.
● Visit a State Park. One of the most generous expenditures of tax monies goes to keep natural lands available and, well, natural.
●Write a poem or read a story about ideas related to this holiday such as: freedom, independence, or peace. Talk to children about what these mean for all beings. Share ways you can bring more of this to our world every day.

This week, think about how you live out your personal independence. You are free to do this any way you wish, and your choosing ways that is also respectful and considerate of others is really something to celebrate.
