Exchange of Ideas

Debra’s Wellness Tips

“If you have a penny and I have a penny and we exchange pennies,
you still have one cent and I still have one cent.
But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange ideas,
you now have two ideas and I now have two ideas.”
– Unknown

My colleague, Byron Stock, used this quotation on his weekly thought. I really appreciated the truth of it. It is simple, and it creates an idea you can easily agree with. Byron works in Applied Emotional Intelligence, in business and government, helping folks with stress reduction, and individual and team performance improvement.

Fostering the exchange of ideas is a very worthy goal. We all interact with family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, supervisors, bosses, and other human beings. We each want to get our point across. We want to be heard. We crave respect.

The best way to achieve these communication goals might be to offer those same values to the others we are in relationship with.

Many organizations exist for the benefit of helping individuals, groups, and organizations foster a healthy exchange of ideas. Check out Center for Nonviolent Communication. Peruse Stephen R. Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

This week, find opportunities for a healthy exchange of ideas. Our every action, word, or thought teaches our world. Let peace begin with us!
